AUCKLAND – Every April, the streets of Thailand come alive with laughter, color, and the splash of water as locals and visitors alike celebrate Songkran, the Thai New Year. Rooted in ancient traditions of cleansing and renewal, Songkran has evolved into one of Southeast Asia’s most iconic and joyous festivals.
Traditionally held from April 13 to 15, Songkran began as a spiritual ritual—pouring water over the hands of elders for blessings and cleansing Buddha statues with fragrant water. Today, those gentle customs have grown into full-blown water fights in the streets, music festivals, cultural parades, and temple fairs, drawing millions from around the world.
While Songkran is celebrated across the country, some of the most memorable experiences can be found in Bangkok, where bustling streets like Khao San Road and the famous Icon Siam mall on the Chao Phraya River turn into water-soaked battlegrounds.
Down in Pattaya, the celebrations are known to last even longer, often stretching out for a full week with beachside parties and live performances. For a more relaxed and cultural take, the coastal provinces of Chanthaburi and Rayong offer traditional ceremonies blended with local nuances, surrounded by lush nature and vibrant markets.
